Professor Takashi Oguchi's research team from the University of Tokyo visited THU-LEAD and held a project seminar

  •        From November 3rd to November 5th, 2019, Professor Takashi Oguchi's research team, a group of six people from the University of Tokyo, Japan, visited THU-LEAD, and held a project seminar on the cooperation project “Research on Intelligent Traffic Management of Autonomous Driving and High-density Population” between the two sides. Professor Takashi Oguchi, Assistant Professor Azusa Toriumi, and four students (Jiahua Zhang, Tianyang Han, Takumi Hanaoka, and Yusuke Kumakoshi) participated in the seminar. Professor Meng Li, Professor Fang He, Assistant Researcher Xi Lin from THU-LEAD, Professor Quan Yuan from School of Vehicle and Transportation of Tsinghua University, Dr. Bo Wang from China Intelligent and Connected Vehicles (CICV), and students of THU-LEAD participated in the seminar. The meeting was held on November 3rd in B239, Lee Shau Kee Science and Technology Building, Tsinghua University, chaired by Professor Meng Li.

           Professor Meng Li first delivered a welcome speech and warmly welcomed the arrival of the group of Professor Oguchi Takashi. Later, Xi Lin, as the representative of THU-LEAD, introduced the main research content and focus direction of the team, including automated, electrified and data-driven transportation. After that, Assistant Professor Azusa Toriumi introduced the traffic simulation modeling for Tokyo metropolitan area. Then, Professor Meng Li introduced the project “Coordination of traffic management and risk control for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games”, mainly focusing on the optimization design of high-density crowd facilities. Based on the results of summer trials of 2019, Professor Takashi Oguchi put forward suggestions for improving traffic system management and traffic demand management for Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Based on the introduction, the two sides made in-depth exchanges and heated discussions on the two main research contents of the cooperation project, namely, the optimization design of high-density crowd facilities and the modeling and optimization of traffic signal control at the network level of autonomous vehicles.

    Heated Discussion

           After a brief introduction and exchange, two teams visited Laboratory of Intelligent Vehicles of Tsinghua University following Professor Quan Yuan. Laboratory of Intelligent Vehicles is located in Lee Shau Kee Science and Technology Building, whose experiments cover the intelligent automobile, intelligent cars for universal book return, the driving simulator and the sand table of intelligent urban transportation system, to which all teachers and students from the University of Tokyo showed great interest under the introduction and display of relevant personnel. Professor Takashi Oguchi himself operated and experienced the driving simulator.

           After the visit, Professor Meng Li, presented Tsinghua memorial gifts to the teachers and students from Tokyo University, and Professor Takashi Oguchi also presented special gifts brought from Tokyo to THU-LEAD. So far, the cooperation project seminar has completed successfully.

           On November 4th, Professor Oguchi Takashi's research team and some members of THU-LEAD visited Alibaba's Auto Navi Map in Wangjing, Chaoyang District, Beijing. Yuelong Su, director of Future Transportation Research Center in Alibaba Amap, and Caiyi Hu, the data analyst received the visitors. Then, Yuelong Su and Caiyi Hu introduced the main business structure of Amap, including real-time navigation, route planning, travel information release, travel time prediction, as well as the development history, corporation culture and future development focus of Amap.

           When 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are about to be held, focusing on the demonstration scene of autonomous vehicles during the Tokyo Olympic Games, both the research team of Professor Oguchi Takashi and THU-LEAD hope to focus the traffic signal control in the autonomous driving area. At the same time, the Beijing Winter Olympic Games will also be held in two cities, Beijing and Zhangjiakou in 2022. Under the mode of conducting competitions in three areas of two cities, how to optimize the facilities for high-density population during the Winter Olympic Games is also the issue that both teams want to pay attention to. In this golden autumn, the visit of Professor Oguchi Takashi and his team is not only a good start of the international cooperation projects between the two sides, but also helps to strengthen exchanges and enhance friendship, so as to build a good and efficient exchange platform, form a long-term and stable cooperative relationship between the University of Tokyo and Tsinghua University, and promote the common progress of scientific research between two sides.
